There are very few procedures in plastic surgery that have such a significant impact on a woman's self-image as breast augmentation.

Also known as augmentation mammoplasty, the procedure involves placing an implant behind each breast to increase it's natural size and enhance it's shape. Women who undergo breast augmentation feel that their breasts are too small and may not be in proportion with the rest of their body. They are often uncomfortable wearing certain clothing styles and may feel self-conscious in a bathing suit or tight-fitting top. Often women want the procedure to restore their natural breast volume, which may have decreased as a result of pregnancy, weight loss, or aging. The best candidates for breast augmentation are women who are in good health, have completed breast development, and are emotionally mature and have realistic expectations.

The Implants

Most women undergoing breast augmentation surgery receive saline-filled implants, which consist of a silicone rubber shell filled with sterile saline (salt water). These implants have been used successfully in thousands of women for over thirty years. Although rare, problems can occur with implants such as deflation or hardening (capsular contracture). It is important that you fully understand the risks as well as the benefits of breast augmentation. Dr. Archer will discuss these issues with you in detail at the time of your initial consultation.

The Surgery

Breast augmentation surgery is performed as an outpatient. Usually the procedure is carried out under general anesthesia.

One of the advantages of a saline-filled implant is that because it is filled after insertion, only a small incision is needed. The incision can be placed in one of three locations: underneath the breast just above the crease, around a portion of the areola, or within the armpit. A pocket is then created into which the implant is inserted. This pocket is either directly behind the breast tissue or beneath the pectoral muscle of the chest. Individual factors and personal preferences will help you and Dr. Archer to determine your appropriate breast size, the location of the incisions, and whether the implants should be placed on top of or underneath the muscle.

Following surgery, you will be asked to keep the area dry for 5 days. This is important to minimize the risk of infection. Most women return to normal daily activities within one week, but are asked to avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for 4 weeks. The new, enhanced shape to your body will be evident immediately after surgery. Like many of our patients who have breast augmentation, you may feel a boost in self-confidence, and find it easier to wear certain clothing styles. In the following months, you will be asked to return for periodic check-ups, so that Dr. Archer can assess your long-term results and address any questions that you may have.
